Male Fertility

We are now in a fertility crisis – how many people do you know that require IVF to successfully conceive? There are many causes to this. The 2007 Summit of Environmental Challenges to Reproductive Health and Fertility reported that testosterone levels in males have decreased 1% per year, every year for the last 50 years! That means we have half the testosterone (and arguably half the sperm count) of our grandfathers. This is in large part due to the sea of chemicals and pollution we are surrounded by. Take for instance parabens found in cosmetics and personal care products, which have been shown to decrease testicle size, sperm motility and sperm count in rats.

Increased body, alcohol consumption, lack of micronutrients and lack of exercise are turning or males in to females and lowering or success of propagating our genes. However there is some light on the horizon.

Some new research from The Cocharne Database suggests that consuming antioxidants boosts male fertility. It is believed that anywhere from 30-80% of males fertility problems arise from free radical damage to sperm. This systematic review (the gold standard of medical research) found that women were more likely to have a successful birth if their partners were taking antioxidants or vitamins (which protects the sperm from free radical damage). This is just one example of why we should be taking vitamins in supplemental form.
